Turbo-Math is based on the premise that in high stakes tests such as the ISEE, SAT and ACT many students suffer from time management, subject knowledge and carelessness issues. Since almost all students take the test in their junior year, their most difficult high school year, they may have little time to prepare. The design of this application is targeted to minimize a student's test anxiety. This accomplished by focusing on, what we consider to be, the three underlying causes:

1.     Subject Knowledge. The application provides a significant number of Dynamic Problems. These problems present key foundational concepts across Pre-Algebra through Pre-Calculus. It allows the student the ability to try a problem, ask for hints and then try again with the same type of problem – but different data. The hints and explanation are algorithmically generated based on the new data.


2.     Time Management. With each successive generative problem, the system captures the time spent and keeps a running display to, hopefully, show improvement as the student continues to study the hints and explanations and thereby improve the time it takes to solve the problem.


3.     Carelessness. The student should approach this application as an accountant would in an audit. Using the old fashion method of paper and pencil. For successive iterations, the student could compare their written solution to the systems explanation and thereby identify where they made a careless mistake.

     

     Many students feel that they can overcome carelessness by saying they won't be careless next time. THIS DOES NOT WORK. Or they feel that by redoing the problem from scratch they will eliminate carelessness. THIS DOES NOT WORK. What does work is to examine their worked out, but wrong results, against the system's explanation. Then interrogate themselves (better then having that done by a teacher or parent) to identify and eliminate the thought process leading to this error.
